Sustainable sourcing

As the biggest tea business in the world, we need to source a lot of tea. Enough to brew a million cups every four minutes.

It puts big demands on the planet. Our tea comes from 21 countries: we work with huge tea estates, and small-scale independent farmers. It gives us a unique understanding of the tea industry and its challenges. And an opportunity to lead the way in sustainable sourcing, helping to shape a better world.

We want consumers to understand where their tea comes from, because transparency is a key ingredient in our ambition to make the tea industry fairer and more sustainable. Greater engagement of our supply chains helps us work more effectively with partners and suppliers to bring about positive change. Since 2019, we publish a list of all our global suppliers of black and green tea – a list we update regularly.

The Ethical Tea Partnership

We are a committed member of the Ethical Tea Partnership, a not-for-profit organisation which brings together the tea industry with development partners, NGOs and governments to improve the lives of tea workers, farmers and the environment in which they live and work.

Certifications

Sustainably certified? That’s us. We’ve supported the Rainforest Alliance since 2007, helping to transform the supply chain. Today, 98% of our tea comes from Rainforest Alliance certified sources. And 93% of the paper and board we use for our packaging comes from sustainably managed forests that are FSC and PEFC accredited.
