PG tips are passionate about making tea as tasty as it can be. And they’re one of the most recognised brands in the UK, having been a staple in people’s kitchen cupboards since the early 20th century. They’re also pioneers of sustainability, and in 2007 became the first major UK tea brand to sell fully Rainforest Alliance certified teas.
PG tips’ story
PG tips loose tea was launched in the UK in the 1930s. Back then it was called ‘Pre-Gest-Tea’, because it was thought to help with digestion. This was soon shortened to ‘PG’ – and it stuck. The brand later added ‘tips’ to the name to highlight that they only use the top two leaves and bud of each tea plant in their blend.
Three decades later, PG tips introduced their first teabag and were greeted with rave reviews. That was just the beginning: in the 1980s they realised most people were making tea in mugs (not teapots), and came up with the stringed teabag in response. In 1996, they launched the innovative – and now world-famous – pyramid teabag. It acts like a miniature teapot, giving the leaves more room to move and infuse for the perfect cup of tea.
PG tips’ products
PG tips Original is where the brand began, and is sold in most shops. For those who like their tea really strong, there’s PG tips Gold and Extra Strong too. There’s even a decaf option for anyone who wants the great PG tips’ taste without caffeine.
After pioneering the pyramid teabag, PG tips continue to lead the tea-volution. They’re now moving all their pyramid bags to a new fully biodegradable, plant-based material, and removing plastic from their products.
